Your Surname Needs a Work Permit Too

This is the reality many people face when moving to a new country and seeking employment. Often, the first thing employers notice is your surname, not your skills or experience.

The way candidates are categorized can feel random. Sometimes it’s reduced to a single number or label. The most common rejection message is: “Sorry, we chose another candidate.” No explanation, no feedback, just silence. It can feel like picking an avocado at the supermarket: blind and impersonal.

Many companies mention diversity on their websites, like a welcome mat at the door. But a mat doesn’t mean you are truly welcome. Real diversity is about action, not just words.

Until then, surnames continue to matter more than they should, and talented people are overlooked simply because of their name.
