Lost in Translation

Not everything can be translated directly from one culture to another, especially when it comes to how we speak. A simple greeting can carry very different meanings depending on where you are.

In Norway, for example, starting an email or a conversation with “hei” is completely normal ( culturally appropriate). It's simply how communication works here.

But when people who are still adapting to a new culture use the same greeting with others from their own cultural background, it can feel different.

In many cultures, including mine, politeness is closely connected to addressing someone by their name or surname. It’s a way of acknowledging a person properly.

That’s why adapting your language and communication style is so important. Being aware of who you’re speaking to and what kind of greeting is respectful in that context helps bridge cultures, avoid misunderstandings, and show respect.
